Michael L. Smith, CPA
Managing Partner, Tax Services
Michael currently serves as the firm’s Managing Partner. He has been practicing in public accounting since graduating with a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree from Brigham Young University in 1994. He started with the firm in August 1996. He has extensive experience with a variety of income tax consulting and preparation engagements for large to medium-sized businesses in varying industries. His experience also includes management and preparation of various financial statement audit and review engagements. His industry experience includes real estate development and construction, rental property ownership and management (including HUD financed and Low Income Tax Credit projects), wholesale and retail manufacturing companies, professional service providers, city governments and non-profit organizations. Michael is married and has four children and one granddaughter.
Jason L. Tanner, CPA

Jason has been practicing in public accounting since graduating with a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree from the University of Utah in 1996 and 1997. He started with the firm in 1997. He has extensive experience with a variety of income tax consulting and preparation engagements for large to medium-sized businesses in varying industries. His experience also includes management and preparation of various financial statement audit and review engagements. His industry experience includes construction, wholesale and retail manufacturing companies, professional service providers, city governments and non-profit organizations. Jason is married and has four children. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family and participating various outdoor activities.
Robert D. Wood, CPA
Partner, Assurance Services
Robert has been in the auditing profession since 2000 and has been with the firm since 2005. He graduated with a Masters in Professional Accountancy from Weber State University in May 2000. He began his career with the Utah State Auditor’s Office where he planned and performed governmental and single audits. Robert’s personal technical competence is in governmental, not-for-profit, and small- and medium-sized businesses. He is currently a member of various professional associations. He is married and has three children.
Aaron R. Hixson, CPA
Partner, Assurance Services
Aaron is a partner in the firm’s accounting and auditing department. He joined the firm in 2007 after 5 years with the audit departments of Ernst & Young LLP and Eide Bailly LLP. Aaron graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Brigham Young University in 2001 and a Master’s Degree from the University of Utah in 2002. His areas of expertise include local governments, manufacturers, non-profit organizations, and retirement plan audits. He is married and has four children.
Ted C. Gardiner, CPA
Partner, Tax Services
Ted joined HBME in 2006. Before HBME, he worked for two years at KPMG in Salt Lake City. Ted has a wide range of tax experience, mostly centered on compliance and tax planning for small businesses, multi-state corporations, international businesses, and high net-worth individuals. Ted’s Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Accounting from Brigham Young University (earned in 2004) are framed in crimson red. He is married and has three children.
Jeffrey B. Miles, CPA
Partner, Assurance Services
Jeff has been in public accounting since 2006. He graduated from Idaho State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting and Finance. He worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas for two years, providing assurance services for private companies and employee benefit plans. He joined the firm’s audit department in 2008. In addition to private companies and employee benefit plans, Jeffrey provides assurance services for local governments, non-profit organizations, and low-income/HUD-insured loan Housing Projects. He is married with five children.
Janice Anderson, EA
Partner, Tax Services
Janice has been with the firm since its origination in 1980. She graduated from LDS Business College. Her expertise is in general accounting procedures and training for small and mid-size companies. She has experience with professional service, real estate development, and general retail entities. She performs taxation planning and services for partnerships, corporations, and individuals. She is married and has two children.
Jesse S. Malmrose, EA
Partner, Tax Services
Jesse has been with the firm since 1999, and is licensed with the IRS as an Enrolled Agent. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from the University of Utah in 2003 and a Master’s Degree in Accounting from University of Phoenix in 2011. Jesse has vast experience in taxation for individual, partnerships, corporations, estates and tax exempt organizations. He also has experience with accounting in QuickBooks and prepares payroll reports for many clients. He is married and has three children.
Nate E. Erickson, EA
Manager, Tax Services
Nate has been with the firm since 2006. Nate graduated from Weber State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting in 2004 and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration in 2006. His expertise is in individual, partnership and corporate taxation as well as audits of various corporations and local governments. He is married and has three children, and enjoys golf and other outdoor activities.
Diane Brown
Manager, Tax Services
Diane has been with the firm since 2005. She graduated from Idaho State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance. She has over 26 years of accounting experience, specializing in small-business accounting and taxation. She has experience with professional service, real estate development, and general retail entities. She performs taxation planning and services for partnerships, corporations, and individuals. She is married and has five children and two grandchildren. Diane’s hobbies include traveling, entertaining, reading, and yoga.
Shawn K. Cottle, CPA
Senior Associate, Tax Services
Shawn recently joined the firm after working in the field as a controller in several distinct industries, including retail and wholesale, transportation, and professional services. He brings hands-on experience having worked personally with new business owners who are starting their businesses, established business owners who are wanting to establish accounting policies and procedures, and experienced business owners who are refining their company core competencies in preparation for going public. Shawn received his bachelor’s degee from Brigham Young University in 1996 and his Master’s of Taxation from Weber State University in 2005. He is currently working towards obtaining his CPA license. Shawn and his wife, Karen, have 5 children.
Todd Sullivan

Todd joined the firm in 2016. He graduated from Dixie State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting in 2015 and is his Master’s Degree in Accounting from Southern Utah University in 2018. Prior to joining the firm, Todd was with the Utah State Tax Commision for 2 years. He is married and has three children.
Warren P. Anderson, CPA
Associate, Assurance Services
Warren joined the firm in 2020. He graduated from Dixie State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting in 2016 and is his Master’s Degree in Accounting from University Utah University in 2017. He has 2 years with local public accounting firms. He enjoys a newfound hobby in the culinary arts. He is happily married.

Michael joined the firm in 2019. He graduated from Weber State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting in 2019 and is currently in the Master’s in Accounting program at Southern Utah University; and will graduate in 2021. He has previous experience as an accounting clerk with a local company. He enjoys a rugby and outdoor activities in general.
Clarke R. Bradshaw, CPA

Clarke is one of the original founders of the firm Hansen, Bradshaw, Malmrose & Erickson. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Brigham Young University in 1976. Clarke’s personal technical competence is in the area of planning and taxation of corporations, partnerships, individuals and estates. Clarke has served in various professional and civic associations. He is married and has five children.
